Description:
NSN, .41 RF, 2 1/2” octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome little pistol that retains some traces of the original bright blue surrounding the front sight blade with the rest the barrel having a smoothly mottled gray patina with areas of plum-brown scattered along its length. The brass frame has a dull ochre-brown patina with specks of dark patina scattered evenly across the surface. The rosewood grips are in fine shape with only some minor handling marks in the original varnish finish. The lock-up is firm and the action is fully functional. This is an interesting little pistol, identical to the “Southerner” deringer, but completely devoid of markings. In his book “All About Southerners” (2002), author and Southerner expert, Lionel Bogut states that all production guns were serial numbered and marked, but that he was in possession of an unmarked, iron frame example that seems to be a pre-production prototype. Aside from the lack of markings, the only other variance from the production guns is its slightly heavier weight (which is also true of this brass frame example). If Mr. Bogut is correct, than this gun could well be considered a brass frame equivalent and would be an exceptional addition to any collection of small frame American pistols and revolvers. {Ref. “All About Southerners” by Lionel Bogut; 2002} Antique
