General Specs: LC Smith, Year 1913, 16 Gauge, 6lb 11oz, Side by Side Serial Number: 215945 Fifteen years and thousands of guns on my journey to the best job a guy could have, but I have not seen a gun like this. We see Fox guns being upgraded often enough, and I have had an Elsie or two that has been custom built to extraordinary in the wake of Steven Dodd Hughes bringing his skills and writings to similar projects. But this gun is upgraded beyond normality. She started life in 1913 as a Field Grade regular frame, sn215945, and the barrels and action were used to build gun. What amazes me is two-fold; first, the workmanship is flawless in every department, and second, the amount of work and features included goes beyond anything I have seen on an L.C. Smith. The action has been filed and shaped into a true round body. Even the sideplates have curvature. The bottom of the frame is sculpted and there are graceful roundings to the sides of the receiver as well. The engraving is very well executed Purdey style rose and scroll, which was carried on to the custom trigger guard that has a rolled edge. The wood is nicely figured English walnut, with a fully rounded profile around the action, perfect wood to metal fit, and shaped to perfection. The checkering is 28LPI and superbly executed with a fine mullered border. Add nicely engraved sculpted heel and toe plates and perfect checkering on the balance of the butt and you have a butt stock to envy. The forend is long and gracefully shaped with an ebony inlaid tip, and beautifully checkered. There is even a unique knurled/checkered area under the tip to create friction with your fingertip when removing the forend...NICE! The bores are perfect, chambers are 2 3/4"and the gun comes with 11 long Briley screw-in chokes for unmatched versatility. Weight is 6 3/4lbs. and balance is perfect between the hands. The mechanics are perfect, with crisp trigger pulls breaking at 3.5 and 4.5 lbs. right and left respectively. It seems as though nothing has been overlooked and the workmanship is impeccable in every way. I would love to know the master gunmaker responsible for creating this fine shotgun. Here is a chance to own a truly fine, American sidelock gun that is like new inside and out, gorgeous to look at, and with the best of workmanship for a very affordable price.
