With the April 18, 1861 burning and capture of the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal by Confederate forces production ceased and only 720 Model 1855’s were produced to that date with many burned during the raid and the remainder removed to the Confederate States Armory at Richmond. Almost never seen only a handful remain that are original. Directly from a multi generational Virginia family which dates to the 19th century. 100% original and fine overall with both barrel and lock dated “1861”. Stock with the original finish. Excellent cartouche with script “JAS” U.S. Government Inspector’s initials for John A. Schaeffer which is the correct cartouche for this date of Model 1855’s on the few which have been observed (see Paul Davies, C.S. ARMORY RICHMOND, pp. 11-13.). Metal with very crisp original deep plum patina. Excellent bore and fine working order including the Maynard Tape Primer mechanism. Absolutely all original and never offered for sale Harper’s Ferry rarity. When Mr. Davies was researching his very fine book he was only able to find 5 dated “1861” during the years he was compiling data. We have only had one other which we sold in 1998 into one of the finest Confederate collections ever assembled. SOLD Antique: Yes |
