Description:
Serial #81838, .45-70, 28 1/2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very interesting Hotchkiss variation that has a turned-down bolt handle and a thin rectangular bayonet rail added to the nosecap (the latter modification required that the cleaning rod be permanently removed). The barrel, nosecap, and bands retain 97-98% of their original blue with only a few very mild hints of silvering at the muzzle and on a few of the exposed and projecting surfaces and edges. The receiver has retained 80-85% of the original bright color case-hardening that blends smoothly into a lightly freckled plum-brown patina that mixes with pewter gray on the balance. The magazine cut-off levers still have most of their original blue finish remaining, as does the bolt cocking piece. The handle and knob have some further freckling with some very mild pinprick pitting starting to form as well. The walnut forend and buttstock are likewise in fine-excellent condition with only some minor handling marks and minute surface blemishes present in the original military oil finish. A rack number (“165”) is present on the buttplate tang. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody information sheet that lists arrival in the warehouse on March 19, 1895, and shipment on January 5, 1915. Third Model Muskets in this configuration are sometimes encountered, all have the turned-down bolt handle, bayonet rail, and rack number, but there is very little information available on the unit that used these rifles. A nearly identical rifle was sold by Gregg Martin s on November 6, 2006 (Lot 443) and is listed as one of 350 ordered by the State of California in 1915. That coincides with the ship date of this rifle, and it would seem most likely that both rifles were part of the same shipment. The bayonet used on these guns appears to have been a slightly modified British Pattern 1888 knife bayonet as used on the Lee-Metford rifle, but with a very slightly enlarged muzzle ring. This is a fantastic example of a very rare militia Hotchkiss and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
