The cal is the obsolete 256 Newton. Charles Newton was way ahead of his time when it came to rifle and cartridge designs. Newton has also been called "The Father of High Velocity". He had several patens on cartridges and basically changed the thinking on cartridge performance. He was an advocate of small bore high velocity. As we know today, that works. He knew it over 100 years ago. The 256 Newton is a very good cartridge even by todays standards. This rifle is a sporter variety with a medium weight 20" bbl. Equipped with a double set trigger. Newton's guns were also noted for being elegant looking rifles as this one is. Overall gun is in good cond. Nearly all blue remains with just some wear. Mag floor plate is mostly grey as is the trigger guard. Buttstock matches gun cond being VG. There is a bit of alligatoring to the finish. Not sure if that is orig finish. It probably had a coat added years ago and that is what is beginning to alligator. An old 1950's style sling is on it. VG bore with strong rifling. A good looking rare rifle!
