#3858 Remington 1858 New Model Army, 44-percussion with a 6-7 bore (on a scale of 10), tight action with good indexing and in the 64XXX serial range, c1864, and so is certain to have “seen the elephant”, as the saying goes. The exterior has a better-than-average barrel address (as these are normally quite weak), but otherwise is about average with overall light freckle pitting and well-worn grips that have slivers, chips, and cracks …but still look to be very usable. For the Civil War buff that wants a good reliable shooter, after a thorough safety checking by a competent gunsmith, and use of modest black-powder loads, this old veteran should make a good shooter.
