This is a post Franco-Prussian War conversion of the 1866 Chassepot to metallic cartridge which was contracted to Kynoch in Britain. The guns were heavily modified and marked with some original blue remaining but the balance now turned to a mild brown and gray patina with scattered small areas of mild brown freckling and pale gray along the bearing surfaces of the matching numbered bolt. The stock has numerous minor handling marks and small surface blemishes in the original military oil finish along with a few miniscule chips missing from the edges of the ramrod channel. The origin and purpose of these rifles are a bit confused since they were almost immediately superseded by the Model 1874 Gras in French service and were instead offered for sale to countries and groups that did not have the manufacturing base to make modern small arms. This is a fine and mechanically tight example of one of these interesting and very well made rifles and would make a great addition to any collection.
