Description:
Serial #81, .22 LR, 30 3/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that was converted to rimfire by Knecht of Olten, in Solothurn. The rifle retains 85-90% of the original blue finish with some fading and silvering at the muzzle, and some plum-brown freckling on the balance of the metal. The receiver is marked “O. KNECHT/OLTEN” on the left side (a Swiss gunmaker, known for his rimfire conversions of Schmidt-Rubin rifles) and the matching bolt, which was given a face with offset firing pin during the conversion, has an overall bright gray patina, and the reddish-brown Bakelite bolt handle is intact and in fine shape. The stock and handguard are also in fine shape with some scattered handling marks and minor surface blemishes in the old, re-applied military oil finish with a series of impact marks along the belly of the butt, and a typical beak-shaped pistol grip that is several tones lighter in color than the rest of the wood. The unnumbered magazine has a heavy brass single-shot loading tray in place of the original follower and there is an inventory label is present at the toe of the butt, applied when the rifle was part of the renowned collection of Bruce Stern (this rifle was lot 2272 of the Stern Collection held in 2008). This is a great, and desirable example of a Swiss .22 service rifle and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
