Description:
Serial #687, .303 British, 30” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a splendid, Birmingham proofed service rifle that was built on a BSA-made receiver by the prestigious British gunmaking firm of W.W. Greener. The “W.W. GREENER. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM” marked barrel retains 85-90% of the original blue that has silvered slightly at the muzzle and is starting to develop a warm plum-brown patina over time. The receiver and barrel have matching serial numbers and “G0379” service rifle numbers indicating that the rifle was built to military specifications for match purposes. The matching numbered bolt retains a commensurate amount of the original blue, and the dust cover has a series of small surface scratches and mild freckling as well. The original barrel and volley sights are still present, and the walnut stock and handguard are in fine condition with several minor handling marks and blemishes marring the otherwise excellent added oil finish. The rifle comes with a single, unchained ten round magazine and a full complement of swivels (four in total). According to Greener's model nomenclature, this is a “ZS 6” grade rifle: “Service pattern rifle, shot but not government viewed” and cost 6 guineas when new. This is a very nice Long Lee rifle by one of the best names in British gunmaking, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection. {Refs. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton; 2007, “The Greener Story” by Graham Greener; 2000} FFL or C&R
