Description:
Serial #6515, .303 British, 30” barrel with an about good bore that has some spots of dark freckling and pitting along its length. This is a very interesting rifle that has a “(crown)/VR/B.S.A.&M. Co./LE/I” marked, 1896 dated receiver. The metal retains 70-80% of the original blue that has silvered and faded extensively on the exposed edges and radii, and begun to turn a mild plum-brown on the balance. There are further small areas of pinprick pitting and freckling scattered about the metal surfaces. The bolt is not numbered to the gun but has a commensurate amount of finish remaining on the dust cover and body, so it looks like it's been with the rifle for a very long time. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered about the added military oil finish, but the “I*” cartouche is still clear on the right side of the buttstock, and there are some short, hairling cracks on the handguard. The long tang buttplate is extensively marked: “(Broad Arrow)/NZ/11940/1901” with a further “55” rack number stamped into the wood just ahead of the tip of the tang. The rifle comes with its original chained magazine, and is a great piece of history that saw New Zealand service and would make a fine addition to any collection. Antique
