Description:
Serial #A27752, .303 British, 30” barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very interesting rifle that has a “(crown)/VR/B.S.A. Co./1901/LE/I*” marked receiver, and a matching numbered, '06 dated barrel. The metal retains about 50% of the original blue that has silvered and faded extensively on the exposed edges and radii, and begun to turn a mild plum-brown on the balance with further small areas of pinprick pitting and freckling scattered about the metal surfaces. The bolt is armory renumbered to the gun and has a commensurate amount of blue remaining, and the original rear tangent sight has been removed, and a BSA No. 9 folding aperture rear sight installed in place of the volley sight aperture. The walnut stock has numerous small-moderate handling marks and blemishes scattered about the thick, added military oil finish, but the “I*” cartouche is still visible on the right side of the buttstock, and there are some short, hairling cracks on the front of the handguard. The long tang buttplate is extensively marked: “N(Broad Arrow)Z/441(?)/(double arrow deaccession mark)” with a further “55” rack number stamped into the wood just ahead of the tip of the tang. The rifle comes with its original chained magazine, and is a neat rife that saw New Zealand service and was subsequently modified for service rifle matches. {Ref. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton; 2007} FFL or C&R
