Description:
NSN, .65 caliber, 12” barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is a handsome and nicely embellished pistol that has an overall speckled pewter patina on the barrel and the lock. The pistol exhibits little to no pitting around the touchhole, and there are three deeply struck, but indistinct European proofs at the breech. The breech itself is decorated with a single tarnished brass band ahead of the tang, and has decorated transition bands where the barrel changes from octagonal at the breech to round. The lock has a rounded banana-shaped lockplate with a graceful swan-necked cock and thin, engraved decorations throughout, including some simulated writing underneath the iron pan and on the exterior of the trigger guard bow. There is no provision for a front sight and it looks as though the barrel may have been shortened slightly at some point in the past. The extensively relief carved walnut stock is in good plus condition with raised floral spray embellishments and intricate inlaid brass wire decorations surrounding the flared, tarnished brass buttcap. The buttcap, trigger guard with urn and palm frond finial, and ramrod fittings were lightly cleaned at one time, but have since begun to reacquire a mellow, ochre-yellow patina throughout. A lozenge-shaped metal escutcheon with very intricate geometric decorations is present on the back of the grip. The wood has a few scattered handling marks and blemishes as well as a small chip missing from the nose of the forend, and a hairline with-the-grain crack running back from the nose opposite the chip. The pistol comes with half of an original wooden ramrod, but the tip is broken off and partially unravelled brass wire wrap is present just behind the muzzle. The lock spring is exceptionally tight, but the lock is still fully functional nevertheless. This is a very nice looking antique pistol with a rather more skillful level of woodcarving than is usually encountered. Antique
