Description:
Serial #5895850, .30-06, 24” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a mid-late '50s-manufactured rifle with an “S-A-3-52” dated, “NM” and “NMPT” stamped barrel; correct “NM” front and rear sights; “NM” op-rod; and correct “NM” gas tube. The trigger group assembly and bolt are correct, Springfield marked parts, and both the trigger group housing and stock barrel channel have the last four digits of the serial number written in white grease pencil, “5850”. The metal retains 98-99% of the original dark parkerized finish with some hints of silvering on the muzzle, some projecting edges, and within the op-rod raceway and other bearing surfaces. The glass bedded walnut stock and handguards are in fine shape with some small handling marks marring the otherwise excellent original finish, and there is a fairly crisp DoD eagle cartouche on the left side ahead of the wrist. The rifle comes with an olive green canvas M1 sling and an August 29, 1977 dated letter on U.S. Army/Rock Island Armory stationery to a previous owner from Mr. G.L. Mayernick, Chief of the Sales and Donation Section, confirming that this Garand was built originally as a National Match rifle and was sold initially on February 23, 1963. Authentic National Match Garands are among the most desirable U.S. military long guns, and this example is in excellent, little-used condition. FFL or C&R
