Description:
This is a rare example of a Colt Model 1895, "38 D.A." revolver manufactured in approximately 1904 under contract for the US Navy. It has the standard 6 inch barrel with the top roll-stamped with the two-line Colt Hartford address and 1884, 1888 and 1895 patent dates and the left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber designation "COLT.D.A.38". The frame, cylinder crane and cylinder latch all have the matching assembly number of "1778" . The butt is roll-stamped: "U.S.N./Naval Anchor/38 DA/16 112/J.L.S./226748". The left side of the trigger guard bow, the cylinder crane, the locking latch and back side of the cylinder are all stamped with a five-pointed star with "W" in the center. This marking indicates that the revolver was returned to Colt for inspection/repair. The back of frame at rear sight has been taken down a bit . It is fitted with checkered gutta percha grips that are same as a Navy Navy on page 160 of Robert Bests book "A study of Colts New Army and Navy Pattern Double action Revolvers 1889-1908" The grips both have the factory serial numbers scratched inside and match the gun. The revolver has a Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder, with the hammer having a fire blue top surfaces with bright polished sides with an all nitre blued trigger. G
Fine condition overall with 60% of the original blue finish  showing field use. The grips are also in good condition. A rare example of a Colt Model 1895, "38 D.A." revolver. SALES HOLD
