Description:
This is a very nice example of the wooden barreled muskets made by the famous Francis Bannerman firm for use by school cadets and the “Boy's Brigades” popular throughout the country in the late 19th century. The musket uses a real, 1864 dated, U.S. Model 1863 lock with a special cast metal breech-piece mated to a wooden “barrel” that terminates in a matching cast metal nosecap/muzzle assembly, complete with removable faux ramrod (missing the right side wood screw). The barrel retains about 70-80% of its original black painted finish with even wear and mild flaking along its length. The functional lock, breech section, and nosecap have developed a dark plum-brown patina with some areas of pinprick pitting scattered about as well. Some mottled gray metal is present on the lock and the walnut stock is in about very good condition with numerous small handling marks and scratches scattered about the original oil finish, as well as a series of short cracks running up from the buttplate tang. This is a neat item, perfect as a decorative accent piece, and an interesting bit of memorabilia as well.
