Description:
Serial #6996, .303 British, 30 1/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This rifle was manufactured at Enfield in 1897, but has a much newer, Australian-made barrel marked “LITHGOW” and dated "1'21" on the knox form. The barrel has the "P inside the Heart" proof which is LT. FE Harts inspection proof from the early 20s. The metal retains 75-80% of the original blue with dull plum-brown and gray fading along the high edges and projections, as well as mild brown freckling scattered throughout. There is further blue loss along the bearing surfaces of the non-matching, but correct dust cover equipped bolt. The rifle retains the front and rear volley sights as well. The walnut buttstock, forend, and handguard have numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes in the otherwise quite nice re-applied military oil finish with no visible stamps or cartouches on the right side of the butt (crisp double arrow “S” deaccession stamps are present on both the barrel and receiver). The rifle comes with an original magazine (no longer chained to the gun), and is a really neat, pre-'98 long Lee, with a fantastic,Lithgow-made barrel. Antique
