Description:
Serial #1231, .303 British, 30 1/4” barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an “L.S.A. Co. Ld./II” marked rifle that has retained 70-75% of the original blue finish with the balance turned to a plum-brown freckled patina with scattered pinprick pitting throughout, most noticeably on the exposed portions of the nitro proved barrel. Heavier pitting can be seen on the nosecap, barrel band, and chained magazine, while the unnumbered bolt has some silvering and gray fading on the bearing surfaces with moderate pitting on the dust cover. The walnut forend, buttstock, and short handguard have a thick added oil finish over numerous scattered small surface blemishes and minor handling marks including some with-the-grain cracks on the handguard. The right side of the buttstock has a still legible London Small Arms cartouche with a large “CCC” stamp close by. Additionally, a rack or issue number is present on the buttplate tang: “R3311”. The significance of the “CCC” marking is unknown, but may for a college cadet unit. This is a very interesting and seldom seen commercial Lee-Metford, and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton, (2007)} Antique
