Description:
NSN, .60 caliber, 4” octagon barrels with very good, lightly pitted bores. These are handsome and well-proportioned pistols that have retained most of the original “tiger-stripe” browning along the barrels with some mild gray fading and silvering along the edges and projections. The floral engraved frames and bird's head hammers have some of the original blue finish within the overall dark pewter gray patina, and the edges and engraving are still crisp and clear. The maker's name appears in flowing capitals along the tops of the frames. The pistols are equipped with captive ramrods that have spring clip keepers about halfway down the under-ribs. The bag-shaped, English walnut stocks have minor handling marks, some mild flattening to the tight checkering, and some light flaking of their original varnish finish. The pistols are housed in their original walnut case with original green baize lining and the following accessories: brass powder flask and bullet container, single cavity bullet mould, cleaning rod with brass jag tip, and an assortment of cast lead bullets. The case is in very good condition with some minor surface blemishes scattered about, a single with-the-grain crack at the top left corner of the lid, and the brass fittings have developed a mild yellow-ochre tarnish. A name has been engraved in script on the circular lid escutcheon: “Roscow C. Sheddon”. Mr. R.C. Sheddon (or “Shedden”) was a county magistrate on the Isle of Wight during the mid-19th century, and a excerpt from “The Isle of Wight 150 Years Ago” is included which has an October 13, 1860 dated article relating to a traffic incident involving Mr. Sheddon and a certain Mr. William Cole, who was apparently speeding down a narrow alley before crashing into Sheddon's carriage (Mr. Cole was fortunate that Mr. Sheddon did not have these pistols on him that day!) Also included is a 1961 dated RCMP firearms transfer permit allowing for the purchase of the pistols from an antiques dealer in British Columbia. This is a fantastic set of pistols that belonged to a leading citizen of East Cowes, Isle of Wight, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
