Description:
NSN, .577/.450 Martini-Henry, 20” barrel with a very good bore that has some minor spots of dark freckling and pitting along its length. This is a very neat carbine (service numbered “81” on the frame, barrel, stock, and forend) that has about 25-30% of the original blue finish turning muted plum-brown remaining on the barrel. There is some pinprick pitting and gray fading present at the muzzle, silvering along the knox form, and some parallel tool marks surrounding the rear sight base as well. The early “HENRY (caduceus) PATENT” mark is present on the left side of the breech, “NSW/POLICE” is deeply struck on the right. The frame has a left-hand, unbolted action, and is factory marked “B.A.Co. Ld./1873” on the right, “HENRY'S PATENT” on the left, with “ALEXR. HENRY” on the rear of the lockplate. The metal has a general muted gray-brown patina with some scattered freckling and a few tiny spots of pinprick pitting scattered throughout, heaviest along the hammer and on the under-lever. There are still traces of original color case-hardening visible on the breechblock, and some original bright blue remains on the breechblock bar as well. The walnut forend and buttstock have extensive “NSW” and “POLICE” stamps under an added varnish finish and several large armory repairs on the buttstock: a rounded repair at the wrist that runs from the rear tip of the lockplate in an arc to the tip of the wrist tang; and a second one at the heel of the butt on the left side. The carbine has a sling swivel on the buttstock and a period snap swivel (minus the sling) attached to the barrel eyelet. The action is still tight and fully functional. These carbines were used to equip the New South Wales Mounted Police, still in existence, and the oldest mounted police unit in the English-speaking world. They were put to hard use during their service lives, but this example has stood the test of time well and still rates very good condition overall. {Refs. “The British Single Shot Rifle” Vol. 1 by Walter Winfer; 1998 & “Australian Service Longarms” by Ian Skennerton; 1976} Antique
