Description:
Serial #395, .50 Spencer RF, 22” barrel with an excellent, bright, three-groove bore. This is a Stabler cut-off equipped carbine that was converted to a two-band rifle by the U.S. Armory at Springfield in the early 1870s and has an overall dark plum-brown patina mixing with some pewter gray at the muzzle and on the frame as well as some even freckling. There is some darkly mottled freckling along the barrel and other metal components with some muted but still visible color case-hardening on the breechblock. The maker's marking is no longer visible on the frame but these rifles were all converted from Burnside-made carbines. The long walnut forend and buttstock have scattered light-moderate bruises and marks throughout the dark military oil finish with clear inspector cartouches on the left side of the wrist just behind the still present sling bar and ring. The magazine tube is in very good shape with a functional spring and follower, the mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly, and a correct ribbed cleaning rod is included. Only about 1,100 Spencer carbines were so altered by Springfield Armory to rifle configuration and this example is in fine condition overall; a great example of a rare and desirable U.S. military long gun.
