Description:
FINE GERMAN FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL CIRCA LATE 1770’S-1780’S. 17” overall with 10” octagon .65 caliber smoothbore sighted barrel signed indistinctly on the barrel and having a large maker’s “P” proof on the underside at the breech (Der Neue Stockel. Vol. 2, p. 995. #8099.). This proof is similar to that of Hans Zellner of Zell but was very probably used by successive generations of Zellner family gunmaker’s in proofing their guns and barrels. Original bronze lined touch hole. Fine quality and condition. All original except the rear lock plate screw which is a correct of the period of use replacement. Gilded brass mounts with openwork side plate and butt cap with boss engraved with a martial “stand of arms” crest. The very distinctive open work on the side plate is very similar to plates seen on the North-Central School of German rifle makers. Trigger guard with “acorn” finial. Much original gold remains on the mounts. Walnut stock with silver wire floral and shell inlay at the barrel tang. Stock with mount for affixing a shoulder stock. Beautifully articulated lock with fine engraved bordering. Cock equipped with safety catch. Small partial crack at the bend of the neck of the cock. Roller frizzen spring with distinctive finial typical of the North-Central school of German maker’s. Excellent walnut stock with all the original finish and with the original horn forend cap. Small hairline crack at the toe of the butt cap. Original ramrod with horn tip. Lock in working order. Extremely handsome showing English influences in design which came into Germany during the mid to latter 18th Century with the German Hanoverian Kings of England.
