Description:
US Civil War Ames Model 1840 Heavy (Dragoon) Calvary Saber. This is a N.P. Ames Cabotville marked Sword. the ricasso is marked "Cabotville 1849" on one side and "US" over "WD", on the other. The pommel cap is marked "WD". The grip is tight and has all its leather wrap including all of its original wire wrap. The blade doesn't appear sharpened and has a nice dark patina but has some areas of fine pitting but nothing drastic or alarming. The leather washer is intact, the length of the blade is 35 3/4", the overall length in its scabbard is 43". The scabbard is dent free and appears to be plated. The condition on this Antique Ames Sword is good plus - very good, overall a nice highly sought after Civil War Sword. Inv. # US 846
