LARGE FRAME, Serial Number #124, Percussion, .36 caliber, 6 1/2” octagon barrel with a very good, partially bright, partially pitted bore. The metal surfaces have toned to a mottled pewter-brown patina with sparse remnants of pinprick pitting and light oxidation staining; the Cylinder shows the ENGRAVED and complete Forest Scene. The smooth walnut two-piece grips rate excellent with some light dings and dents and old added finish. The inside of the grips are correctly numbered to the revolver and “SHILO” is incise carved on the inside Left Grip. The two screws on the butt of the grip frame and the one on the backstrap are missing. All parts are matching and the gun times and locks nicely... I love the mechanical ingenuity shown in revolvers of the CW period, and these Allen & Wheelock revolvers are among the most interesting designs of the period. The 2nd. and 3rd. Michigan Cavalry probably got this pattern, and other units likely carried them as well.. Anyway, it's a clever design. The hammer is not only side hung, but the trigger guard releases to act as the loading lever for the rammer Only about 700 of these .36 Caliber Percussion revolvers were made by Allen and Wheelock in 1858-1861... A neat old gun $2,650. SOLD |
