Description:
Cogswell & Harrison Rare Early Sidelock, circa 1882 a rare early Cogswell hammerless lever-cocking sidelock built on the Gibbs & Pitt patent, 12 bore, 2 1/2" chambers, reproved for nitro at 3 Tons, original 30" damascus steel barrels choked .012 IC and .012 IC, smooth concave game rib engraved "Cogswell & Harrison, 142 New Bond St., London", 14 3/4" LOP over the original horn butt plate, 1 1/2" DAC, 1 7/8" DAH, neutral cast, 6 lbs. 10 oz., extractor, straight grip, splinter forend, gold line cocking indicators, automatic reverse-direction (downward) safety with "Safe" in gold, vacant stock oval, nicely figured English walnut. Comes in what appears to be it's original case with the the proper address on the label. Gun seems to be in excellent mechanical condition, bores are both .732, min. barrel wall thickness .727 and .731, some missing brown on barrels, wood has various dings, dent and scratches, case is structually sound but some inner dividers are loose and handle needs to be reattached, case straps are missing. A very early hammerless sidelock with interesting lever-cocking design and also interesting early safety that was trying to mimmick the direction of manually cocking of hammers I'd suppose as at this date, all were accustomed to hammer guns and having to relearn shooting hammerless guns. This gun is featured in plate 4 of the Cogswell & Harrison book.
