Description:
SOLD..Antique 1873 Winchester Rifle. 44-40 caliber and octagon barrel. Here is a very nice looking 1873 Winchester in the very sought after 44-40 caliber. Has the standard 24" octagon barrel. This is a very early 3rd model. S/N 96375 and made in 1882. It still has the carry over parts from the second model including a heavier barrel, no caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier. This is absolutely 100% correct for this time period. This gun has never been messed with. To start with, the bore is in poor condition. Shows heavy pitting in spots. NO rings or bulges. Still shows rifling but would not recommend for any long range shooting. Would shoot with a jacketed bullet well I am sure but probably not well with a lead cast bullet. Would be an excellent example to have a barrel liner installed if you wanted a good looking, great shooter.  The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly.  The metal is a very nice dark brown patina that has has never been cleaned on or messed with. NO pitting anywhere but just a very small spot on the end of the butt plate and a small spot on the end of the barrel and mag tube. A very nice looking gun on the outside. The markings are excellent. The upper tang markings are perfect but I pulled a little on the camera and it looks a little blurry in the photo. The markings are all perfectly sharp. All the screw heads are excellent and not all burred up. Still has the original dust cover that is still tight and retracts with the lever throw. The wood is near excellent. The forearm is tight and fits high to the metal all around. Never sanded on or messed with. NO splits or cracks. The butt stock fits tight and is high to all the metal and never sanded on or messed with. NO splits or cracks. Very nice fitting wood on this one with no issues. That is about all I can say on this one. I will say that if the bore was as good as the outside of this gun it would be priced at $2450 but it is what it is. It really is a very nice looking 1873 and has never been abused. Lots of history here being made in 1882. Would still make a decent shooter at closer ranges and with some jacketed bullets you may be suprised at what it can still do. I just do not have time to load jacketed bullets right now as all I have loaded is cast lead. $50 insured mail shipping. Call me at 765-728-8049 with any questions or for more photos.
