This is one of the 280 Remington-Lee rifles that were the first lot to be inspected by Lt. H.H. Eames at the New York Navy Yard after he took over for Lt. W.W. Kimball in 1891. The rifle has about 50% of the original blue remaining that blends smoothly into the predominantly plum-gray patina that remains on the exposed metal portions, and also has some fading and silvering at the muzzle, as well as some of the other projections. The receiver and bolt have a matching patina with slightly more original blue remaining and some minor plum-brown freckling, mainly on the handle, and crisp “U.S.N./(anchor)/No. 3210/H.H.E.” inspection markings on the top of the receiver. The walnut stock has an armory added oil finish over scattered handling marks and small blemishes throughout, and has some additional minor chipping along the rmrod channel and a handful of noticeable bruises on either side of the wrist. Deeply struck rack/issue markings are present on the comb of the buttstock just ahead of the “51” stamped buttplate tang: “L/220/C”. The Navy and state naval militias ordered these rifles in small amounts since the consensus was that a smaller caliber rifle would soon be adopted (and in fact the Navy did adopt the Model 1895 Winchester-Lee not long afterwards). This example comes with a single magazine, correct metal ramrod, and is in fine overall condition; a great example of a scarce U.S. Navy rifle for any collection of U.S. military longarms. {Ref. “ The Remington-Lee Rifle”, by Eugene Myszkowski; 1994} Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Remington Model: Lee Serial Number: 52869 Caliber Info: .45-70 Gauge Info: .45-70 |
