Description:
Serial #791, .303 British, 30” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a 1902 dated rifle that has about 90-95% of the original blue finish remaining with some mild fading at the muzzle (where it looks like a muzzle cover of some sort was used for a time), and silvering along the exposed edges and projections. The matching numbered bolt has some further fading on the curved edges of the cocking piece and safety, and there is some mild flaking on the magazine cut-off. The barrel band, nosecap, and the chained magazine match the condition of the rifle with most of the original blue remaining and plum colored fading along the edges. The rifle is outfitted with a Motty Special Steel target barrel which is marked both on the knox form and along the top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight. H. J. “Harry” Motton was a well known Australian gunsmith, cyclist, and competitive shooter who converted many ex-military rifles for target shooting (his shop was located at 482 Pitt St., Sydney). The walnut stock and forend are in fine overall condition having only minor surface scuffs and blemishes marring the otherwise excellent armory quality military oil finish, although there is a very minor chip on the right side of the wrist. The British ordnance and Australian Commonwealth cartouches are still crisp and legible on the right side of the butt, as are the unit and deaccession double arrow markings as well. This is a wonderful ex-Australian military “Long Lee” target rifle in excellent condition and would make a fabulous addition to a collection. {Ref. “The Lee-Enfield A Century of Lee-Metford & Lee-Enfield Rifles & Carbines” by Ian Skennerton, (2007)} FFL or C&R
