Description:
Serial #1228, 12mm Perrin CF, 5 3/4” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of faint freckling within the grooves. This is a seldom seen revolver, without the left hand frame cut-out (some examples of the Perrin have an Adams style safety mounted on the left hand side of the frame, but some examples have had ) that was of the type imported for use in the Civil War in very small numbers, and incorporates several innovative features that were well ahead of its time: large caliber bored-through cylinder, centerfire metallic cartridges, loading gate, and a self-contained ejector rod. The metal of this example has turned to a dull, lightly freckled pewter patina from the original arsenal bright, and also exhibits a small amount of pinprick pitting near the muzzle. The revolver is simply marked, “PERRIN/(???)(???)” on the left side of the frame, and “(star)/PARIS” opposite. The one-piece, smooth walnut grip is in very good condition with some minor handling marks in the old, added oil finish as well as a shallow chip missing from the butt on the left side. The revolver's action is still tight with firm lock-up and a strong mainspring. About 550 of these revolvers (out of an initial contract for 1,000 pieces) were eventually delivered to the US Government by the Frenchman, Alexis Godillot between January 6, and May 31, 1862. According to author John D. McAuley, any combat use of the Perrin revolvers is unknown, but he notes that as of December 31, 1862, there were 249 Perrin revolvers on hand at the U.S. Ordnance Depot in Louisville, KY. Two years later, 187 Perrin revolvers were stored at New York with a further, single example kept at the New York Naval Yard. This is one of the rarest and least known Civil War revolvers, and would make a splendid addition to any collection of Civil War arms and equipment.
