#15924, Holland & Holland, 98 New Bond St, London; A H&H "Best Quality" Back Action 12 Bore Hand Detachable Lock Royal Ejector "Nitro Express Paradox" (The first "Nitro Express" ordered in April 1913) Fosbery Patent Sidelock finished November 29, 1913 for Major H. H. Nawab Muhammad Nasrulla Kahn, the heir apparent of Bhopal. It has an additional set of London proved 12 Smoothbore Game Barrels Made in 1992. The original Paradox barrels are 28" Ejector Chopper Lump with a slight raised rib and 2 folding leaf sights at .743" bore, the 9-groove ratchet rifling paradox choke is 3" long, 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .036" and .034" on the left. The Paradox barrels were originally nitro proved in 1912 with Cordite and a 750 max grain bullet & 1 1/8 ounce of shot, they were then re- proved in London in 1992 at the current bore size - 2 3/4" chambers - 1200 BAR and with the proper re-proof marks. Then in 1992 a brand new set of 28" Ejector Dovetail Lump smoothbore barrels were installed at T. R. (Tony) White & Co. in Staffordshire, England. They are .731 .010 & .016" (Imp.Cyl. & Mod.), 2 3/4" chambers and London proved in 1992 at 18.5MM - 70MM chambers and 850 BAR. The gun is with a hidden third bite and both barrels are equipped accordingly. The gun is with double triggers, Hand detachable locks, Brazier locks, Auto safety, Long extended top strap that goes over the comb, New wood in 1992 by Tony White with excellent color & contrast, Anson forend release, Half grip at 14 9/16 x 1 7/16 x 2 1/4" over a 3/4" leather pad with plugs for removal, It will go 14 7/8" with a 1" pad, Very nice cast-off for the right hand, Great balance and it comes to the hand with ease and points like a dream, 7 lbs. 9 oz. with the Paradox barrels and 7 lbs. 2 oz. with the new shot barrels, 99% coverage of period Royal scroll engraving, The piece has 100% new case colors by Tony White (One of their specialties), The Paradox barrels remain excellent inside except the right bore has non-problematic pitting and was London proved accordingly, The new Tony White 1992 barrels are virtually new, Smack on the face with plenty of bite. The whole is cased in a later classic leather cornered leather trunk that fits both barrels and has 2 vintage labels for Paradox loading. Colonel Fosbery's patent #7568 of 1885 was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball or conical bullet. Plus, here you get the bonus of a virtual new set of 28" shot barrels from a shop in England that does outstanding work, proper game gun weight and a new buttstock by professionals. The locks and the inletting on the inside remain in superb condition for sport shooting the balance of the 21st century. This is a late enough H&H Paradox that you get Chopper Lump barrels, extended top strap, third bite, detachable locks, original nitro proof and it is the stronger back action body just like all of their double rifles. Originally this piece was regulated with 38 grains of Long Cordite with 2 grains of Black Powder & a 606 grain bullet as their "Nitro Express Paradox". The flats are marked Cordite and 750 grain bullet but not a cordite charge. The sight blades go from 50 & 100 yards on one blade & 150 yards on the other. These are the absolute correct sights for the "Nitro Express Paradox". Thru the years I have had my fair share of Paradox guns in 8-10-12-20 & even a H&H 28 bore but this gun will stand up well against the best of them. This is dreams of tigers and ships and palaces, fine spices and women and silk. /////////////////////////////// H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns, only 163 12 Bore Nitro Paradox's were ever produced. The last Paradox, by serial number only, was a 10 bore #15979 and finished October 10, 1930 at a cost of 166 pounds. The very last was a 12 bore #15972 and was finished in 1933. In 1914 #15924 set Nawab Nasrullah Khan back about 70 guineas or $9354 U. S. dollars in today's buying power. ////////////////////////////// Nawab Nasrullah Khan was an expert hunter and was one of the few hunters in India who had achieved the distinction of becoming "nausherwan" – a hunter who bags nine tigers in a 24-hour span. Edward, Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VIII and then Duke of Windsor) visited Bhopal in February 1922. The Prince went to Kachnaria to shoot big game, particularly tigers for which Bhopal was famous. Nawab Nasrullah Khan was there and at the time he was considered a famous shikari. ////////////////////////////// T. R. White & Co. is a traditional English Gunmaking company established in 1989.
