Description:
This is one of the commercially made Artillery Carbines that was made for the British trade.  It was manufactured by Robert Hughes/Universal Fire Arms Works/Birmingham!  It is so marked in the round cartouche on the stock.  This is a really high quality piece which has an engraved lock, nickel silver engraved trigger guard and engraved nickel silver nose cap.  The gun follows the Artillery Carbine features with the carbine rear sight and an ivory insert front sight.  The carbine had an overall length of 40 ½ inches.  This one is 42 ½ inches.  The carbine barrel was 24 inches, this one is 26 inches.  The carbine was 577 cal.  This one is 45 caliber with Whitworth rifling.  The carbine had plain wood.  This one is fine checkered.  Robert Hughes operated at 22 Moland Street, Birmingham England from 1855 to 1870.  The barrel is blue and retains about 70% of the finish.  The stock is oil finished.  It does have one repair near the retainer for the wedge.  It is well done and the checkering has been recut.  It also retains the swivel loop on the butt and the swivel on the front band.  The Whitworth rifling is nice and sharp and very good.  The engraved hammer is in excellent shape.  A truly nice, high grade example of a very rare British Carbine!  US only – no international sales.  Buyer pays $50.00 shipping in hard case.  Three day inspection allowed if returned UNALTERED.  Antique – no FFL required.  If your state requires an FFL for antiques, you should call 251-510-5007 before buying.  Must be 21 years of age to purchase.  Any weapon you plan to shoot should be inspected by a competent gunsmith before firing.  Give us a call or email us at jimconfederateordinance for more information.
