Description:
This LC Smith Grade E hammer gun, serial number 11177, was one of only 15,714 guns manufactured by LC Smith between 1880 and 1887 while located in Syracuse, NY.  As the Syracuse production represented only 3-1/2% of LC Smith’s total production, this Damascus barreled gun may be of special interest to LC Smith collectors, but also shooters with historical interest in the nation’s expansion in the late 19th Century.  The double-barrel hammer guns made by LC Smith, Ithaca, Remington, Colt, and others in the 1880s and 1890s, may have not been the guns that “won the West,” but they were certainly the guns that settled the West (and Midwest).  This gun was probably first owned by a farmer or small rancher who used it to put food on the table and keep predators at bay.  However, it remains fully functional today.  How many things manufactured in America 130 years ago can still be used effectively for their original purpose?

The Oxford scroll pattern in the Damascus steel is distinct, as refinished.  The bores are very good for a gun of this period.  Bright as honed, they nevertheless retain some artifacts of former pitting.  The lettering on the barrel rib is clear.  The original stock is rejuvinated by removing oxidation and pertroleum-based oils, refilling pores and refinishing using traditional stock oil, and re-cutting checkering.  The original forearm and the butt plate were damaged but have been saved.  The lettering and engraving on the receiver are distinct and deep.  As seen in the pictures, the receiver has a pleasant patina and traces of original case color remain.  The engraving on the trigger guard and forearm metal is re-cut.

This gun has 30” Damascus steel barrels choked Modified (.020) in the right barrel and Improved Cylinder (.008) in the left.  The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 041/.033/.040 and at the middle of the barrel is .044/.042/.044; the left barrel is .037/.041/.041 and .041/.047/.039, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breach are .752/.757 respectively.  Chambers are 2-3/4”.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  This shotgun weighs 7 lb 9 oz.  The drop at the comb is 2-1/8” and at the heel 3-1/8”.  Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the original butt plate is 14 inches.  All serial numbers match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days.  Seller has fired this shotgun using RST 2-3/4” shells designed for use in Damascus barreled shotguns.  For any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially for a gun such as this that is approximately 130 years old, it is recommended that new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was engineered.  This gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which we will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the full price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Back in Time, LLC  -- Preserving late 19th and early 20th century double shotguns.
