Made between 1882-1889 (and not being marked “Model 1890 on the frame), this sturdy shotgun was the FIRST commercially successful pump-gun made in the USA, being a full ten years before the Winchester 1893 …and 15 years before the Model 1897. It was the last brainchild of Christian Spencer, the inventor of the famed “Horizonal Shot Tower” Spencer Repeating carbines and rifles of the Civil War. However, too late to help Spencer and in 1890, Frances Bannerman bought out the failing Spencer Firearms assets and he produced the final Model 1890 Spencer shotgun in to the 1900s. This particular gun retains about 75% of the deluxe Damascus pattern on the barrel, a fine+ bore, and a smooth tight action. The wood is slightly undersize at the top tang and oversized at the buttplate (see photos), however, the checking on the pistol grip is still 75%. Overall, it is a LOT better than most Spencer shotguns, and worthy of a decent shotgun collection. $1795 SOLD Antique: Yes |
