Original late issue Model 1873 serial numbered in the 126,xxx range reissued in 1887. All parts Model 1873 and stock and breechblock Model 1884 upgraded at Springfield in 1887. Stock cartouche dated “1887” with U.S. Inspector’s stamp “SWP” in script. Springfield Archive Records list two other rifles in this range as Model 1873 rifles. One rifle serial numbered only 5 numbers away is listed as issued to the 4th Infantry in 1887. This regiment was on Frontier duty during the entire Post Civil War Indian Wars. They were at the Battle of the Rosebud and in the Little Big Horn Campaign as well. They were posted in the West continually during this time. Fine overall with 70% plus blue. Excellent wood with clearly visible cartouche. Nice lock markings with crisp “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD” and with the early “1873” date. Perfect working order and excellent bore. It is very possible that these reissue Model 1873’s were used by Indian and white scouts and civilian personnel attached to various U.S. Frontier commands during the period. Historic and in respectable condition considering it’s period of use. SOLD Antique: Yes |
