Description:
Serial #3, .36 Needle-Fire, 25 1/2” octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some light freckling within the grooves. This interesting little break-open rifle utilizes the screw-breech system invented by Jean Jacques Rissack of Belgium and incorporates a hinged barrel that is held fast to the standing breech by a threaded breech-piece operated by a large, spoon-shaped handle. The long firing needle passes through the breech-piece which would pierce the bottom of the paper cartridge to ignite the primer fixed to the base wad housing the bullet. The barrel retains most of its original twist pattern with fine original browning and some faint silvering along the edges of the barrel facets. Bright, original fire blue still remains on the breech handle under some dark plum-brown freckling and the floral scroll engraved frame has a lightly freckled, bright gray patina with some traces of an old coating of protective varnish or lacquer still present. The underside of the barrel has London proofs and the maker's name on the top flat: “VENABLES & SON, OXFORD”. The English walnut stock is in fine shape with only some minor small handling marks and blemishes in the excellent oil finish, and sharp, deep checkering at the wrist. The rifle is fully functional and has no lateral play in the barrel when closed. This is an interesting and unusual British rook rifle and is in very good-fine conditon overall. John Venables & Son were one of Britain's great old gun making firms and operated at 99 St. Aldgate's Street in Oxford from 1860-1928. This is a very well-made and attractive gun and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
