Description:
This Colt Model 1878 12 gauge hammer shotgun, which was manufactured in 1879, is rare in that it is set up for the left-handed shooter, with the left trigger forward, the left barrel choked more open than the right, and the cast 1/4" on.  The wood, as shown in the pictures, is beautiful.  The mottled look of the stub twist steel barrels is especially attractive, the outside of the barrels is flawless, and the bores are bright.  The lettering on the barrel rib and the engraving on the receiver are sharp.  The receiver has a pleasant patina with some discoloration, which may be an artifact of the original case color.  This gun has been properly reconditioned, and with the proper care will not need another tune-up for the next 30 years or so.

Its 30" barrels are choked Modified (.020) in the right barrel and Light Modified (.014) in the left.  The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 036/.041/.047 and at the middle of the barrel is .042/.047/.043; the left barrel is .041/.044/.039 and .045/.049/.045, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breach are .738/.738 respectively.  Chambers are 2-3/4”.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  This shotgun weighs 8 lbs 3 oz.  The drop at the comb is 2-1/2” and at the heel 3-3/4”.  Length of pull is 14-1/4”.  All serial numbers, 1956, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  We have fired this shotgun using low pressure 2-3/4” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one over a hundred and thirty-five years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Back in Time, LLC  --  Preserving late 19th and early 20th century double shotguns.
