Description:
Early Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield SA revolver with "US" stamp on butt and "US" marked holster. Cal. .45 S&W - 7" Bbl. - SN 76XX (1876-1877) - all matching numbers.  Bore is excellent - bright and shiny with sharp rifling  - shows only a very few spots of minor roughness.  Action is perfect - tight and crisp with perfect timing and ejection. Metal is excellent overall with no rust, pits, or corrosion but shows a few minor surface spots or oxidation, mostly on the frame - retains 90% to 95% nickel finish - hammer retains lots of case color.   Markings are sharp and clear, except very faint  but visible "US" stamp on the  butt - also a stud for a lanyard or ring has been installed on the butt.  Proper inspector markings on cylinder, inner frame, and barrel lug. The walnut grips are undamaged and have excellent fit but apparently  are not original to this revolver - they are somewhat wider at the bottom  than the normal grips but have a very nice look and feel. -  The holster is in Fine condtion with all seams intact and a clear "US" stamp but muzzle end shows wear on both sides .   Only about 5200 of the second model Schofield were produced and not many remain today - most all  were taken back by the US Ordnance Dept., refurbished, and sold on the civilian market after the US adopted the Colt SAA -  most went tp Bannerman or Schuyler, Harley and Graham and were nickeled and re-sold.  Many were originally  issued to the 4th US Cavalry and the Schofield was very popular with early West characters including Bill Tilghman, Jesse James, the Youngers, and the CW raider, Quantrill.   This is an exceptionally nice example of a scarce S&W Schofield in Fine to near Excellent condition and except for grips and stud, all original that will make great piece for an Early West collection.
