ORNATE FRENCH GARDE DU CORPS OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD BY COULAUX FRERES CIRCA 1820-30’S. 46” overall with 38” blade engraved and gilded with martial and floral motifs. Ricasso engraved in a gilded panel with the maker “COULAUX/FRERES on the right side and ‘MANUF/DE/KLINGENTHAL” on the left ricasso. Gilded and engraved brass hilt and guard with “STAND OF FLAGS” and “CROWNED SHIELD” of the famous ceremonial Garde du Corps of the Palace of Versailles. Sharkskin grip wrap with the original brass retaining wire. Steel scabbard. Very large sword and one of the most ornate of all French Cavalry swords of the era. Excellent all original condition with nearly all the gold finish on the hilt and blade. Engraving equally as fine. Grip wrap all original. Excellent scabbard which is free of dents. Coulaux Freres were one of the finest of all Klingenthal sword makers from the 1790’s well into the mid 1800’s. Rare and desirable in beautiful condition.
