Description:
Serial #C22767, .38 Special, 2” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This exquisite revolver was inspired by the Francolini masterpiece that now resides in the NRA Museum in VA, and features full coverage engraving with incorporated vampire and holy relic motifs by master engraver Wayne D'Angelo. The metal is finished in silver plate with a crucifix framing the muzzle of the barrel, bats with folded wings inside the cylinder flutes, full moon with clouds and bats on the cylinder yoke, and fearsome grotesques woven into the overall background design. All of these embellishments are set against a classic Nimschke style floral scrollwork motif set off by typical New York type scalloped line borders. The engraving carries over onto the gristraps and trigger guard while the inside of the grip frame is signed “WAD” on the left side. Brilliant fire blue is present on the frame screw heads, ejector rod head, and on the trigger. The fantastic elephant ivory grips have a mellow, slightly creamy, off-white color with subtle, barely visible grain and are scrimshawed on both sides: Dracula emerging from his coffin on the left, a profile view with cape on the right. The revolver is housed in a custom-made, coffin-shaped walnut case with French fitted interior lined in burgundy colored velvet that has a single hairline stress crack on the lid, but is otherwise in excellent, virtually new condition. Included accessories are: a small silver vial inscribed “Holy Water”, letter opener/stake with “Vampire” insert, six Winchester headstamped .38 Special cartridges with red jewel “primers” and silver vampire head “bullets” (these are copies of the shells included with the Francolini original), and an official looking police-style badge that reads, “INSPECTOR/VAMPIRE SQUAD/TRANSYLVANIA” and has a central enameled cross and badge number (13 of course). Also included with the revolver is a folder of documents dealing with the extensive embellishments of this revolver. The first is a letter dated August 22, 2012, from Nutmeg Sports LLC (the company that made the grips and received the initial commission for the gun itself) and is signed by James V. Alaimo, the former superintendent of the Colt Custom Shop, detailing both the revolver as a whole, the work performed on the grips, and how the revolver differs from the original Francolini gun (these grips are featured on Nutmeg Sports' as well: #341 and #342 on the photo list). The second is a 1987 copy of “GUNS” magazine which has the Francolini gun as its cover story; “Occult Colt”. This is a stupendous example of engraving artistry, performed by one of America's top master engravers, with superb accessories and provenance. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection and would certainly make an excellent item for display at Halloween. FFL
