Description:
Serial #11567, .303 British, 27 3/4” barrel with a very good bore that has some light freckling within the grooves. This well-traveled rifle has about 75-80% of the original blue remaining, mostly on the barrel, with the balance turning to an overall plum-brown on the bands and trigger guard, mild silvering at the muzzle and along the projecting edges as well spots of darker freckling scattered about as well. The receiver has a mostly pewter gray patina with mild specks of brown freckling and the bolt has some small impact marks along the rear face of the handle. There is some further mild freckling on the adjustable rear sight, and on both the Harris magazine thumb-piece and front sight hood. The barrel on this rifle was slightly shortened before sale to the U.S., either to correct a headspace problem, or to fix a loose connection, and is a fairly common alteration on these U.S. Army-used Rosses. The walnut stock and handguards have an old added armory oil finish over numerous small handling marks minor surface blemishes. Extensive Canadian unit markings are present on the buttstock including: a struck “P.P.C.L.I./676” (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry), Ross cartouche, large “II*” model stamp, and “VAB/2 C.O.C./104” (Canadian Ordnance Corps) on the right side; “ACO/36” on the left. There are further U.S. Ordnance Dept. markings on the underside of the wrist applied when the rifle was issued as a training and reserve rifle during the initial build-up to U.S. entry into World War I. This is a great example of an extensively Canadian and U.S. marked Mk. II* Ross military rifle in very good plus-near fine condition overall, and would make an exceptional addition to either a Commonwealth or U.S. military collection. {Ref. “The Ross Rifle Story” by Phillips, Dupuis, and Chadwick; 1984} FFL or C&R
