Description:
Serial #2089/2191, .40 CF, 9" octagon barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some freckling and spots of mild pitting. The metal surfaces have an overall pewter gray patina with light freckling and some scattered very light handling marks from the years. The octagon barrel has milled accenting grooves along each corner and the flared breech has remnants of the original gold wash within the light scrollwork; much of the detail has now worn smooth. The frame shows some loose rococo scroll engraving on the left, right, gripstraps, and trigger guard bow while the steel gripcap has similar scroll engraving. The European walnut grip rates about very good some flattened checkering bordered by rococo scroll and floral carving accenting the checkered panels. These gravity fed magazine pistols were invented and patented by Jean Nicolas Herman who worked for Victor Collette of Liege, and doubtless manufactured them while under his employ (most known examples are "VC" marked and this one is so-marked on the underside of the barrel). The front of the magazine has a hinged trap door into which the "cartridges" are inserted. When the pistol is cocked the rising breech lines up with the magazine and a spring-loaded top lever allows a cartridge to be inserted therein. When the trigger is actuated the breech drops and the hammer falls almost simultaneously. There are some very plain and very ornate examples known; this one is a medium grade example of these very rare pistols. The sliding safety catch atop the tang is no longer present and the firing pin, which would originally have been a long and very fragile tapered spire with slight downward curve, was replaced at some point with a fairly short and squat pin. This is nevertheless, still a really nice example of one of these interesting, intricate, and very rarely encountered magazine parlor pistols. Antique
