Description:
This variation of the Burnside carbine is sometimes called 4th or 5th model or also standard model. These were ordered by the government and built in 1863 through 1865. The Burnside was another breech loading percussion gun with a different idea on how a breech loading gun should work. There was many attempts by manufactures during the Civil War to get away from the muzzle loaders. This was Burnside's attempt and it does work quite well. Standard type Civil War carbine. This one has a 21" bbl. On the bbl is marked "Cast-Steel 1862". There is still some orig finish on it but most is an antique grey patina. There is some buildup of ancient crud on the right hand side but metal is nice overall. Burnside marking is very visible. The rest of the frame is a grey color with nice smooth metal. Still some good blue on the upper tang and finish remaining on the bottom and the falling block portion. Orig butt stock has the government cartouche on the left hand side. Faint but visible. Stocks are in good overall cond with metal butt plate and good fitting wood to tangs and frame. Forearm is in VG cond for a Civil War carbine. If your collection has a Civil War theme, this would be a good addition.
