Description:
C.S.A. VIRGINIA CONTRACT SERIAL RANGE E. WHITNEY PERCUSSION .36 CAL. NAVY CONFEDERATE REVOLVER CIRCA 1860. Six shot 7 5/8th inch octagon barrel signed on top “E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN”. Serial number 2725 stamped under the barrel (with “L” prefix) and on the inside of the grip flat. Matching numbers with the loading lever un-numbered. Early model with serial number in the range of known Confederate used Whitney Navies including the one carried by Gen. Jeb Stuart at the time he was killed at Yellow Tavern, Virginia (#3110). Serial numbers 2255, 2796 and 2814 are all known identified Virginia Confederate Officer carried Whitney Navy revolvers. Very good plus overall with original patina mixed with minor amounts of faint blue on the cylinder and barrel. Good markings. Fine original grips with the original finish. Working order and very good bore and chambers. 500 of these Whitney Navies were ordered by the State of Virginia just before the Civil War of which they complained about the lack of safety stops on the back of the cylinder which this revolver has none of. Closest Confederate documented serial number Whitney belonged to CSA Army Chaplain Alfred Randolph of Virginia and is now in the Museum of the Confederacy. Reference see Daniel Williams’ THE WHITNEY NAVY REVOLVER pp. 97-100.
