Description:
Serial #17, .32 RF Short, 4 3/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome revolver that retains virtually all of its original high polish blue finish with only some very mild silvering along the arc of the loading gate and edges of the trigger guard bow and two very small pits through the finish on the right side of the frame at the grip juncture. The lever operated ejector retains 90% of the original color case-hardening with the balance of the metal turned to a smooth pewter gray patina. The hammer and trigger are brightly finished while the loading gate retains traces of color case-hardening and the loading gate spring has nearly all of its original straw color remaining. The revolver has simple but attractive engraved double line border decorative accents and is marked along the topstrap with the owner's name in Gothic script: “R.L. Muir”. Additionally, Canadian World War II era registration numbers have been stamped into the butt. The English walnut grips are finely checkered and have very little wear or flattening to the points and the mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The revolver is housed in its original lockable presentation case that is lined in bright green baize with the original intaglio printed paper label of “D. Leonard/Gun & Pistol/MAKER/Aston Street/ Birmingham” (Daniel Leonard 1832-1900) inside of the lid. The case contains: a cleaning rod, turn-screw, pewter oil bottle, cartridge block for 18 rounds of ammunition, and the key to the lock (which is missing the brass escutcheon). The case is in very good condition with some slight separation of the lid panel from one of the corners and some minor warping which prevents the catches from engaging the lock fingers. Also included are period handwritten instructions on the operation of the revolver with some allusions seeming to indicate that the recipient was known personally to the writer. This is a fantastic, very early Webley that would make a fine addition to any collection. Antique
