Description:
This handsome revolver with all matching part numbers, a strong working action, a round barrel, a beautiful patina on all metal parts and a set of grips in excellent condition comes with some good news and some possibly not so good. First some additional facts. It holds 6 shots and appears to be .36 caliber. There is some minor pitting on the right side of the frame just above the trigger. There are some light scratches on the frame, barrel , other parts and on the brass trigger guard and backstrap. All are fairly light and do not detract from the overall excellent appearance of this revolver. There are a few minor marks on the grips and a small dent in the right side grip. There is a light mark on the cylinder from revolving.
Now the possible bad news. This looks a lot like a Colt Navy Model 1851 which had an octogon shaped barrel- and it might have been just that. The barrel may have been turned and made round, non matching part numbers may have been buffed off and restamped with matching numbers, and the Colt name and address may have been removed and the barrel stamped with the " C.S.A." designation. It may then have been refinished with its current nice patina. There is no design on the cylinder and no proof marks visible. A lot of work and expense and a lot of "ifs" but all possible.
Now the " good" news. Why would someone have gone to all that trouble and expense? Knowledgeable weapon dealers have given me a plausible explanation. During the Civil War the South lacking the large factories and industrial facilities that existed primarily in the North, suffered from a shortage of weapons. To help solve that problem, the South would send men out to the battlefields after a battle to pick up the weapons dropped by fallen soldiers and deliver them to a Southern arsenal to be repaired, refurbished and reissued to Southern troops. It is possible that this revolver is one of those weapons. In any event, I have never seen another one like this in my many years of gun collecting.
Whatever the truth and history of this gun is, it's a beautiful revolver and it comes with an intrigueing story. And now you know what I know. I have enjoyed owning it for over 50 years and now you have an opportunity to do so.
