Description:
Model 1851 Navy, serial #105XXX, identified and engraved on backstrap to J.R. Paxton. CONDITION: Overall very good; metal is a dull gray with tiny areas of original blue and no pitting; very faint, basically no cylinder scene remaining; good action with a very small softness to the mainspring; all numbers match except wedge as there is no stamped number on the barrel lug. This gun clearly saw much action with Capt. Paxton. ID INFO: Joseph Rupert Paxton, son of a founder of the Catawissa/Reading Railroad, declined a diplomatic post offered by Pres. Lincoln shortly after inauguration, and instead joined national military service. He served first with the Philadelphia City Troop in 1861 and then with the 15th U.S. Regular Army Infantry from Oct. 1861-July 1865, reaching the rank of Captain. He served as aide-de-camp on the staff of the "Rock of Chickamauga", Gen. George H. Thomas, at the Battle of Nashville. Paxton also mustered the 21st Ohio Light Artillery into service in 1863. The 15th Infantry saw heavy action at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta. Paxton was a Philadelphia lawyer, editor and author. He died in 1867 in Houston TX at age 41. As a bonus, I have a stamped envelope mailed to Paxton near Sharpsburg. This is a nice historic gun from my personal collection, as I am not a dealer.
