This is an 1884 dated rifle that has retained about 97-98% of the original blue on the barrel and receiver with some trace silvering at the muzzle and on a few of the raised and exposed edges. The low-arch breechblock has most of the original bright color case-hardening remaining which mixes smoothly into a lightly freckled pewter gray patina on the balance (even more of the original bright color case-hardening is present on the barrel tang). The ramrod, bands, and rear sight likewise retain most of their original blue finish with only some very minor silvering along a few of the edges. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The walnut stock has not been sanded and retains the original military oil finish with a crisp “SWP/1885” cartouche and minor handling marks and bruises scattered throughout the wood. This is a splendid example of a U.S. Trapdoor rifle and is in hard-to-find excellent condition.
