#4765 Winchester 1895 “Flatside” Octagon barreled Sporting Rifle, 40/72WCF with VG+ bore (7+) and smooth tight action. VERY early serial number in the 7XX range and almost certain to be in the 1st year of production. The metal is a smooth even grey-brown with no pitting of consequence, the wood is basically decent, original standard “open” sights and has never beed drilled for a receiver sight. Okay, that was the good stuff …now for the bad. Somewhere in this guns 120-year life span, it has had the barrel shortened from the standard 26 or 28 inch length down to 23-1/2” and the forearm bobbed to proportionarily match the barrel. It’s a very decent looking early Flatside receiver ’95 and in a scarce caliber and octagon barrel …but it has had about $500 in value whacked off the barrel and fore-stock. What a shame. Stll, it’s about VG/VG+ as described condition-wise if not for the period cutting. $995
