Description: SOLD....Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 caliber and octagon barrel. Here is a pretty decent ole 1873 in the highly souhgt after 44-40 with an octagon barrel. It has the standard 24" barrel.. S/N 283802 and made in 1888. The bore is just about good. It does show some pitting from black powder but still shoots OK. NO rings or bulges. NO backed out primers or bulges cases. It shoots OK at close ranges but I would not take it to target match at longer ranges. It feeds, fires and ejects just fine. Hammer notches are perfect on half and full cock. Good strong springs throughout and no issues on the mechanics. The metal is a smooth medium gray to brown patina. NO piiting on the gun at all. Both front and rear sights are newer replacements but the dove tails have not been altered in any way so original sights can be installed if so desired. Still has the original dust cover that retracts with the lever throw and is still pretty tight . Most of these in this condition have been robbed of the dust cover but this one is still intact and functions fine. The barrel address markings are all very good but as you can see the upper tang and the caliber markings on the barrel are weak from 120++ years of honest wear. The markings on the brass carrier are weak also but mostly still visible. Just a honestly used ole 73. The wood is pretty good with the forearm showing a tight grain split on the left side from the forearm cap back about 4" but it is still tight. The right side of the forearm shows a sliver missing at the front about a 1/16th" deep and about an 1 1/4" long. NO other splits or cracks. The butt stock is very good with NO splits or cracks but shows a little shrinkage from drying out around the upper tang as you can see in the photo. This is just a pretty honest 73 but for the sights as mentioned. It shows very honest wear and use but absolutely NO abuse. A decent example of this famous and highly sought after configuration in a 73. A good ole 73 that you can take out and plink around with all you want. It does not need $300 to $400 worth of parts and labor to make function again as most of these 73's will need to get up and running. Priced as reasonable as it gets for an actually working 73 !!! I personally test fire all of these rifles before I list the for sale but I have to say I am not liable for anyone who shoots these ole guns without the proper ammo and proper knowledge of the use and firing of any antique firearm....
