The Prince was the Mayor of Warsaw in 1916 and 1917. Lubomirski decided to stay in occupied Poland during World War II and on November 10, 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo, and spent two months in prison. During the war and after its end, the Lubomirski family was often harassed and kept under surveillance by the Gestapo. During his imprisonment he was tortured by the Gestapo, his health deteriorated and he never fully recovered from his wounds sustained in prison. He died July 31, 1943. To this day, the family charitable tradition is continued by its members forming The Princes Lubomirski Foundation. The organization supports the development of Polish art, science; it also develops medical and educational projects. The scope of activity of the organization is very wide, from supporting ecological construction to endowing scholarships for students, purchasing computer hardware and medical equipment to the rebuilding of especially prized monuments.
