Description: This is a halved spherical 12-pounder projectile that measures 4 1/4" diameter and has a weight of 4 lbs. 4 oz. (1.93 Kg). According to the previous owner's notes, this shell was originally dug at Petersburg, VA in 1970. The exterior of the shell has a lightly flaked brown patina with some orange surface rust consistent with a dug relic. The contents of the interior cavity have been reconstructed with a black resin matrix containing the lead ball shrapnel in place of the original sulphur based material, and a separate, slightly deformed Bormann fuze, as was originally fitted. The fuze used a helical black powder filled channel, graduated at certain points, to allow for burn times ranging from 1/2 to 5 1/4 seconds. The gunner would simply punch the disk open at the appropriate graduation which exposed the fuze channel. The shell comes with a nicely made wooden rest and would make a nice piece for display or as a decorative accent for a gun room or study. SOLD Manufacturer: Civil War Model: Shell |
